Export Shopify Content > Files: Back Up Your Files Library

Back up the Shopify Content > Files library: export images, videos, 3D models and PDFs, and filter by type, upload date and where files are used.

To back up your Files library, open Export content files, choose the file types and filters, press Preview files and then Export files. The ZIP contains images, videos, 3D models and other files such as PDFs from Content > Files, including files that no product uses.

What is the difference from a product export?

A product export starts from products, so each file belongs to a product and can be named by SKU or placed in a product folder. A content files export starts from the Files section of your Shopify admin, so it also reaches files that are not attached to any product, such as PDFs, banner images and the images that metaobjects use.

Which file types can I include?

CheckboxWhat it covers
Include imagesImage files in Content > Files.
Include videosVideos hosted on Shopify. YouTube and Vimeo videos cannot be downloaded.
Include 3D models3D model files.
Include other filesDocuments and any file that is not an image, a video or a 3D model, such as PDFs.

How can I filter content files?

  • Upload date. Last 7 days, last 30 days or a custom range (Files added in the specified date range).
  • File references. Choose one: all files, files used in products, files used by metaobjects, or files not used anywhere.
  • Metaobject type. When you choose files used by metaobjects, pick one metaobject type or any type. Only metaobject types that have a file field are offered.

How are files named and sorted?

OptionChoices
File name formatOriginal name, or alt text (files without alt text keep their original name).
Folder name formatNo sub folders, file type (images, videos, 3D models, files) or upload month (YYYY-MM).

Two different files with the same name in the same folder are numbered (name.pdf and name__(2).pdf) and the preview shows a notice.

What does the preview show?

The summary shows the total files found, the count of images, videos, 3D models and other files, the total size (approximate), the reference and the upload date range. Each file in the list shows its thumbnail, name, type, size, alt text and upload date. Remove any file with the X next to it.

Why does the app ask for new permissions?

The content files export reads your files and metaobjects. The first time you open it, Shopify may ask you to approve these read permissions. Approve them in the Shopify admin and reopen the page. The app still cannot change anything in your store.

Does it count toward my plan?

Yes, like product files: every file in the ZIP counts as one. See downloads and plan limits.
